The Risks of Buying Pistachios from Street Markets or Bulk Bins
Share
The vendor at the market tips pistachios into a paper bag, names a price, and it feels like a straightforward transaction. But what do you actually know about those pistachios? When they were harvested. How they were stored. Whether they were tested for aflatoxins. The answer to all three is: nothing.
Nine things you do not know when buying loose
- When they were harvested. Loose pistachios at markets rarely carry a harvest date. They could be weeks or years old.
- How they were stored. Pistachios are highly sensitive to humidity. A bag stored in damp conditions is a mould incubator. You have no way of knowing.
- Whether they were tested for aflatoxins. At a market stall, no mycotoxin analysis is carried out. The pistachios pass through many hands before reaching you.
- Where they come from. Bulk sellers often do not know or disclose the country and region of origin. You cannot apply any traceability standard.
- How they were exposed. Loose pistachios sit open to air, dust and varying temperature and humidity throughout the day.
- Whether they are mixed. At many market stalls, pistachios sit alongside other produce. Cross-contamination risk increases.
- Any quality certification. No harvest date, no packaging date, no origin, no test results.
- Why they are cheap. A very low price is rarely accidental. It signals lower grade, older stock, or conditions during production and handling that do not allow for a higher price.
- Who is responsible. If something goes wrong, there is no traceability, no lot number, no supplier to contact.
The alternative: a supplier with full traceability
A reliable pistachio supplier can tell you:
- Exactly when and where the pistachios were harvested
- How and where they were stored post-harvest
- Whether laboratory chemical analysis was carried out for aflatoxins and other mycotoxins
- Whether colour sorting was applied to remove kernels with anomalous colouration
If they cannot answer these questions, you have your answer.
At Grechio, every batch of Pistacia vera pistachios is tested via laboratory analysis and goes through colour sorting before it reaches you. We know exactly when our pistachios were harvested, how they were processed and what the analysis found. You can find our unsalted Pistacia vera pistachios here.
